HAIR TYPES
Hair types are generally categorized based on their texture and curl pattern. The most widely used classification system is the Andre Walker Hair Typing System, which categorizes hair into four main types (1, 2, 3, and 4), each with subcategories based on the curl pattern. Here's a brief overview:
1. Type 1 - Straight Hair
- 1A: Very straight, fine, and thin.
- 1B: Straight with slight body, medium-textured.
- 1C: Straight with body and thicker strands.
2. Type 2 - Wavy Hair
- 2A: Wavy with a loose, open "S" pattern, fine and thin.
- 2B: Wavy with a more defined "S" pattern, medium-textured.
- 2C: Wavy with a distinct "S" pattern, thicker strands.
3. Type 3 - Curly Hair
- 3A: Loose curls with an "S" pattern, tends to be shiny, and easily styled.
- 3B: Medium curls with a tighter "S" pattern, more volume, and prone to frizz.
- 3C: Tight curls or corkscrew curls, coarser texture, and more prone to frizz.
4. Type 4 - Coily Hair
- 4A: Tightly coiled with an "S" or "Z" pattern, dense, and has a defined curl pattern.
- 4B: Z-shaped coils with less definition and more shrinkage. The hair bends in sharp angles.
- 4C: Tightly coiled with no defined curl pattern, can range from fine to coarse texture, and experiences significant shrinkage.
Understanding your hair type can help you choose appropriate hair care products and styling techniques tailored to your unique needs. Keep in mind that these categories are generalizations, and many people have a combination of textures on their head, which is often referred to as "curl patterns." Additionally, hair porosity and density are other factors to consider when caring for your hair.
